The new gallery is located in the Brookwood Hall mansion at 50 Irish Lane, East Islip. It is on the ground floor adjacent to the Islip Art Museum's contemporary art galleries. The inaugural exhibit describes the history of the Brookwood Hall mansion, which was built as private home referred to as Stellenwerf's Lake House in 1903, was converted to an orphanage during World War II as the Orphan Asylum of Brooklyn, and is now the headquarters of Islip Town's Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. The exhibit contains reprints of rare photos, including many from the orphan years, and unusual artifacts such as samples of hand-painted frescoes which once adorned the mansion's ballroom.
